Over 360 Delegates Raise $385,000 For National Convention Expenses
REDWOOD CITY, Calif. -- As the Democratic and Republican National Conventions grow near, hundreds of delegates have turned to GoFundMe—the world’s largest online fundraising platform—to pay for travel, lodging, and other expenses. To date, over 360 delegates or alternates have raised roughly $385,000 for travel costs and expenses.
Over 60 Republican delegates or alternates have raised nearly $60,000 in preparation for the convention in Cleveland that starts on July 18. On the other side of the aisle, over 300 Democratic delegates or alternates have raised over $325,000 to ease the financial burden as they make their way to Philadelphia on July 25.
Meet the delegates:
Jack Bell, a delegate from Olympia, Washington, turned to GoFundMe to raise money to support his journey to Cleveland. “I began my political journey in Olympia during the Republican caucus in March,” said Jack. “I was elected to be a county delegate and attended the State Republican Convention in Pasco. Yesterday I was humbled and honored to be elected as the youngest Washington State Delegate to attend the Republican National Convention in Cleveland. I want to energize my generation of Republicans and represent the Washington voters in Cleveland.”
Matthew Walbeck and his service dog Titan have raised over $1,000 to help reduce the burden of expenses for the convention Cleveland. They were selected to be an alternate delegate from Texas and have already arrived in Ohio.
Robert Camacho, a delegate from California’s 11th Congressional district, is heading to Philadelphia later this month. On his campaign page, he writes: “I am thrilled to announce that I have been selected as an Elected Delegate for Hillary Clinton from California Congressional District 11th to the Democratic National Convention. I am reaching out to you today to help support my costs to the convention in Philadelphia (July 24th to the 29th). The money raised will cover the cost of my round trip to Philadelphia, hotel expenses, food and transportation while in Philadelphia which are expected to be extremely high.”
Eden McFadden is still feelin’ the Bern and is heading to Philadelphia. On her campaign page, she writes, “I appreciate you taking the time to read this, and helping me get to the convention to represent our hero, Bernie Sanders! It means so much to me to be able to take part in such a great moment in history.”
